Hi,
We stumbled across a bit of really good news for Durban a few weeks ago. No, we're not alluding to 2010 and the arrival of soccer fans in their multitudes, although that will surely be a boon for the economy as a whole. We are referring to the fact that Durban has been listed as one of the top 10 family beach holiday cities in the world! Seriously, we're not making this up. Publishing heavyweight, Lonely Planet, made it so in their latest publication which hit US bookstores recently. Durban cracked the nod along with the likes of Kauai (not the food chain!) in Hawaii, Cottlesloe in Australia and Karon Beach in Thailand - to name but a few.
"Durban resembles a gigantic resort holiday paradise, raised for the sole purpose of entertaining families. Lined with safe beaches watched over by lifeguards, the Golden Mile is great for swimming, snorkelling and water sports." - Lonely Planet
Did you know?
- The Golden Mile was developed in the 1970s
- East Coast Radio started as Radio Port Natal and began broadcasting from the SABC studios in Old Fort Road on 1 May 1967. ECR now has an audience of just under 2 million and is the 2nd largest regional radio station in South Africa
- uShaka Sea World is the 5th largest aquarium in the world, boasting 32 tanks totaling 17,500 cubic meters of water
- Durban is the 3rd most populous city in South Africa, the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and is famous as the busiest port in Africa
- Gateway is the 8th largest shopping center in the southern hemisphere and the largest in South Africa
- Sahara Stadium Kingsmead hosted the first Test for the South African cricket team after re-admission into international cricket and also hosted the timeless Test against the English cricket team in 1939, which was called off over fears that the English would miss their ship home
Go Durbs! Have a happy and healthy August.
