Function Keys 1-4

The function keys are the line of "F" keys going across the top of your keyboard going from F1 to F12. This tip covers F1 through F4 and covers the "Alt", "Ctrl" and "Shift" combination functions of these keys to see what they do.

Please Note: Not all of these key combinations may work. Some of them may be program specific, or obsolete. If you're slamming the keys and nothing is happening, it is probably time to move on...

For now, let's have a look at the basics of function keys F1 – F4.

LOL CatsF1

Pressing this key usually brings up the help file for the program you're currently in. In order to test this:
- 'Left click' on a blank area of your Desktop
- Press F1
The 'Help File' should jump to attention, placing its vast knowledge at your disposal.

F2

This key is used to rename items.  Here's how:
- Click on a file or folder and press the F2 key
Just like that you'll be able to rename it with ease.

F3

This brings up the search function in Windows, but will vary for other programs. Terrific for Internet Explorer / Firefox users who want to find a specific word or phrase on a web page with ease.

F4

This key opens the address bar in Internet Explorer . Pressing 'ALT + F4' will close any active program.

That's four keys down, with eight to go...
