Recycle Bin Missing from your Desktop

LOL Cats

Usually if you've gone on a 'delete' spree, it's with the comfort that in the case of an emergency your wondrous work will still be available in your Recycle Bin. But, what if your Recycle Bin has gone on a walk-about? This is worrisome, to say the least, but there is a solution depending on your Operating System.

Windows Vista

  1. Right-Click on your Desktop to bring up the "Personalize Appearance and Sounds" window
  2. Click "Change Desktop Icons"

    Tip1

  3. Make sure that "Recylc Bin" is selected in the check box. If it's not checked, then do so and click "Apply".

    Tip2

Your "Recycle Bin" icon should now be back on your desktop.

Windows XP

  1. Right-Click on your Desktop and choose "Properties"
  2. Click on the "Desktop" Tab
  3. Click on the "Customize Desktop" button
  4. In the middle of that box, you will see some of the more common desktop icons. Click on the one for the "Recycle Bin" (it looks like a trash can)
  5. Click the "Restore Default" button
  6. Click "OK" and then go take a look at your desktop

The Recycle Bin icon should be back, but if it's not there are alternative options to try. For the next option:

  1. Go to your "Taskbar"
  2. Right-Click in any open space
  3. Click on "Toolbars" and then "Desktop"
  4. The word "Desktop" will then appear at the end of your taskbar with a double arrow beside it
  5. Right click on those arrows and you will see an option for the "Recycle Bin"
  6. Drag and drop that Recycle Bin icon to your desktop

If this option does still not help, we have another trick up our sleeves:

  1. Right-Click on your "Taskbar" again
  2. Right-Click in any open space
  3. Click on "Toolbars" and "New Toolbar". There should be an option there for the Recycle Bin as well
  4. Drag and drop that icon to your desktop

The moral of the story is: don't panic. There are various methods to use to reign your Recycle Bin and get it back where it belongs.
